Every step we take is transforming the way we look at cancer care around the world. The funds raised directly support over 1,300 researchers and scientists at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre who show up each day and push the boundaries of cancer care.

Did you know The Princess Margaret is home to several hundred “world-firsts” in cancer research and patient care because of your hardworking fundraising dollars? It’s true.

 
  1. In 1950 
    Dr. Vera Peters’ groundbreaking work showed that patients with early Hodgkin disease, then considered incurable, could be cured if given extended field radiotherapy.  
  2. In 1961 
    Drs. James Till and Ernest McCulloch discovered stem cells and how they function, which changed the course of cancer research.
  3. In 1976 
    Dr. Hans Messner performs first allogeneic bone marrow transplant at Princess Margaret, now one of the largest blood and marrow transplant programs in the world. 
  4. In 1984 
    Dr. Tak Mak cloned the T-cell receptor that pioneered work in the genetics of immunology and in 1988 Dr. Ian Tannock discovered important mechanism by which cancer cells become resistant to chemotherapy.  
  5. In 1999 
    we installed full-field digital mammography enabling earlier diagnosis of breast cancer with less radiation.  
  6. In 2006
    Dr. John Dick identified colon cancer stem cells. 
  7. In 2012
    we became the first site in Canada to use a robot to produce chemotherapy doses for patients.
  8. In 2020 
    Dr. Gelareh Zadeh and Dr. Daniel De Carvalho apply a newly developed non-invasive blood test to diagnose brain cancers, which sets the stage for its application in other solid tumours.
